Paul "Mike" Michael Thompson Obituary

March 8, 1944 - April 28, 2024

Mike (Paul) Thompson, 80, passed away at home in Milwaukie, OR on April 28, 2024, after a battle with dementia.

Mike was born on March 8, 1944 in Moline, IL to Anita and Robert Thompson. The family moved to Portland, Oregon, and Mike attended Woodlawn Elementary and Benson High School.

After high school, Mike served in the Army National Guard and had an apprenticeship at American Sheet Metal. He worked in the industry as a welder and fabricator until his retirement in 2017.

Mike and Vicki (his wife) met while attending Woodlawn. They were married on September 11, 1964, a union that lasted for 59+ years. They had two sons and a daughter. The family lived in northeast Portland until 1976, when they moved to Milwaukie, OR.

Mike was predeceased by Anita (mother), Robert (father), and Brett (son). He is survived by Vicki (wife), Megan and Gregg (children), Heather (daughter-in-law), Aaron (son-in-law), Margaret, Sam, and Oscar (grandchildren), and Ron Jensen (brother).

Mike could fix just about anything. He often spent weekends repairing family cars and anything else that needed attention around the house. He put a lot of care into the yard, and it showed. In his spare time, he ran three marathons and several Hood to Coast Relay races. He coached all three of his children in youth sports. Baseball and softball were his favorites. Mike also spent several semesters working his way from the bottom to the top of the Clackamas Community College math program, sometimes taking courses more than once for the fun of it. He enjoyed time at Mt. Hood after introducing his family to night skiing in the 80s. That love for the mountain led to a 40+ year tradition of skiing Hood over the New Years holiday.

He enjoyed the company of the dogs he and Vicki shared, as well as those of Megan and Aaron. His favorite walking spot was Meldrum Bar Park.

He and Vicki were active in their parish at St. John’s as readers, eucharistic ministers, and volunteers. Mike was also a regular participant in Bible study groups and was a member of the Knights of Columbus.

Services will be held at St. John the Apostle Church (417 Washington St., Oregon City, OR 97045) on Friday, June 14 at 11am. A short reception will follow in the St. John’s school cafeteria. In lieu of flowers, the family would welcome a donation to St. Vincent de Paul at
